Starting pitcher Pedro Avila turned in an outstanding performance to lead the Fort Wayne TinCaps to a 2-1 win over the Lake County Captains on Thursday at Parkview Field. The 20-year-old righthander allowed one run in seven innings while striking out nine to improve his record to 3-1 for the season.
Avila was given a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first by his teammates. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-out triple and then scored on a single by G.K. Young to put Fort Wayne on the scoreboard.
The lead held until the top of the fifth when the Captains scored their only run of the game. Lake County got two of its seven hits off Avila in the inning.
The TinCaps regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. A walk to Jack Suwinski followed by singles by Nate Easley and Rod Boykin loaded the bases with no outs. Captains’ reliever Alsis Herrera struck out the next two batters but then hit Reinaldo Ilarraza with a pitch to force in Suwinski to give Fort Wayne a 2-1 lead.
Hamsel Rodriguez relieved Avila to start the eighth and pitched two perfect innings to earn his second save of the season. Rodriguez struck out four of the six batters he faced. Neither Avila or Rodriguez walked a batter in the game.
Fort Wayne collected six hits in the game with Tatis’ triple and Buddy Reed’s double being the only extra-base hits in the game. Young, Suwinski, Easley, Boykin and Hudson Potts each had a single.
The TinCaps’ defense committed three errors but none led to runs.
