The Quad City Mallards were 3-0 in Fort Wayne last year with P.J. Musico in goal, and Wednesday night the Komets and the newly acquired Musico returned the favor in Quad City. Musico made 29 save as the Komets improved to 5-1 against the Mallards this season with a 6-2 win. Kyle Thomas scored twice and assisted on a Brady Vail goal and Mike Embach scored twice to lead the offense. Mason Baptista scored the other goal and Jamie Schaafsma had two assists for the Komets who were playing without leading scorer Shawn Szydlowski who missed the game with an unspecified injury. Thomas's three points allowed him to push to 40 for the season, five behind Szydlowski for the team lead.

The win keeps the Komets three points up on Quad City for third place in the ECHL's Central Division. Fort Wayne is two points behind Tulsa for second, though the Oilers have played six more games than the Komets. The Oilers also play in Atlanta tonight.

The Komets' next game is Saturday at home in a rematch with Quad City.

It was also a busy day for the Komets off the ice on Wednesday. First, center Mike Cazzola was named the ECHL's Rookie of the Month for December after scoring nine goals and 19 points in 14 games. He was joined by Szydlowski as the ECHL Player of the Month after he scored 11 goals and 29 points in 14 games.

Before last night's game, the Komets also released forward Stephon Thorne so they could activate forward Taylor Crunk off injured reserve. Crunk has two assists and 24 penalty minutes in 10 games this season with the Komets, while Thorne had no points and 14 penalty minutes in four games with Fort Wayne.
