With North Side up five points with less than a minute to go, Brandan Johnson could feel it.

Raising his hand in the air, the junior guard held four fingers aloft.

History.

North Side secured its fourth-consecutive SAC Holiday Tournament championship on Thursday night, knocking off previously unbeaten Homestead 56-49 in front of a capacity crowd at Wayne High School.

The Legends are now the first program, girls or boys, to win the annual mid-season tournament that dates back to 1975 four straight years.

"Every year is different because you have some kids who haven't won it before, so you are focused on that and getting those kids the opportunity to share the experience," North Side coach Shabaz Khaliq said. "It is an awesome experience, especially considering no one has (won it four straight times)."

The Legends (12-1) won its latest championship in atypical fashion - with defense.

With Homestead led by a pair of sharpshooting threats in Jack Ferguson and Parker Manges, North Side's goal was to limit the outside looks of the senior duo.

Ferguson and Manges were able to get loose at times, but the Legends, particularly late in the game, were able to make things difficult for the Spartans. The duo combined to shoot 6-of-15 from three-point rage, including just 2-of-4 in the second half.

"We just have to give credit, (Davontae Kinnie), Brandan, the whole team as a group," said senior Juan Quarles, who finished with nine points. "We were locked in and executing defensively."

North Side held a 52-46 lead with just under two minutes remaining when one of the few defensive breakdowns left the door open for a Manges three that cut the advantage in half. Following a Jaylen Butz basket on the next possession, the Legends rose up defensively to prevent any open looks from the outside. In fact, Homestead was held scoreless the final 1:44 of the game.

"Manges got loose on us one time there late and hit a big three," Khaliq said. "He was one of those guys that we wanted to focus on as well as Ferguson. We wanted to keep the pressure on them and wear them down."

The Legends held the lead for the majority of the game, with Homestead stealing the advantage for a few minutes in the third quarter. North Side was able to survive a second quarter where senior Jaylen Butz was relegated to the bench with foul trouble.

Tough defense and opportunistic offense allowed the Legends to play even with Homestead in the quarter and take a five-point lead into the break.

Butz finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Keion Brooks Jr. added 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Spartans (8-1) were led by Manges' 15 points and Ferguson's 14, with Brandon Durnell adding 11. Homestead had several shots late in the game to push the Legends but were unable to convert opportunities on offense.

As the buzzer sounded, North Side celebrated another SAC Tournament title, this one of the historic variety.

"It feels amazing," Quarles said. "I wanted to come to a program bigger than myself and be a part of history. This is one of the greatest feelings I've had in my life."
