Homestead learned a valuable lesson in its SAC Holiday Tournament semifinal matchup against Snider to not overlook anybody.

It applied that lesson in the final against Carroll, looking every bit like the top team in Class 4A.

The Spartans scored 32 points in the first quarter to quickly distance itself away from the Chargers (11-5) on the way to a 76-47 rout in the SAC Holiday Tournament championship game on Thursday afternoon at Wayne High School.

It is Homestead's second SAC tourney crown in as many years.

After a lackluster effort in Wednesday's 59-52 win over Snider, the Spartans (14-0) came to play from the opening tip against Carroll. Homestead hit five of its first six three-point attempts and led 32-10 after the first eight minutes.

"We really talked about coming out with a lot of energy today," Homestead coach Rod Parker said. "We wanted to set the tone particularly on the defense end. I thought we came out and played eight minutes of pretty good basketball on both ends."

With season goals including a Class 4A state championship, Homestead cannot afford to have letdowns like it had against Snider. While the Panthers did play well, careless turnovers and sub-par shooting were the biggest factors in the tight semifinal contest.

Parker made it a point to reinforce to his team the importance of playing well against everyone.

"We learned we cannot come out complacent against anyone," said senior Jazmyne Geist.

Homestead (14-0) was in the zone on Thursday. Karissa McLaughlin finished with a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists while Madisen Parker and Teryn Kline added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Thursday's championship will fuel the Spartans as they embark on a vicious second-half schedule. Homestead heads to state-ranked Lawrence North on Tuesday, with showdowns against Carmel and Heritage Christian also looming.

A trip to Ohio over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend will see the Spartans play two of the best teams in the Buckeye State in Mason and Huber Heights Wayne.

A schedule laced with threats and a likely deep postseason run looming means that Homestead must be at its best over the next few months.

"Our schedule gets very difficult," Parker said. "To get to play in this tournament is one of the best things about joining the SAC in having a mid-season sectional and I think we learned a lot from it.

"I think it was a lot to build on as we move into that tough stretch in January."

With a lesson learned and another SAC Holiday Tournament championship in hand, it's a safe bet that the Spartans are back on track.
