Jesus is not like any other religious leader in the world. He does not require pomp and prestige before you come before him. He wants you to come in any condition. Look at His followers: social outcasts, women (who at that time had little place in society), the less educated, everyday working people, people others would ignore and didn't have time to bother with.
He called everyone, but those who were self-righteous, or those who declared self-sufficiency without God mostly refused him, not that he didn't love them, but they didn't want or need Him.
He called the simple to confound the wise. It's just simple faith; trust in what he has done for you.
