This year, those of us in Steuben County received our new property assessments. Mine was higher than I thought it should be, so I contacted the county assessor's office, which informed me I could challenge the assessment.
When I received the packet there was a note that stated that my property has been assessed at the wrong value for the last eight years. This was changed, and my taxes went down by over $100. I then proceeded to ask how I can get my money back for the last eight years that I overpaid due to the government's error. This is when the issues started.
I was told that I could only get three years back due to state law. Even though it was their mistake, I was told there is nothing more they could do. I would like to know who is accountable, so I can file a lawsuit to get my money back. I feel that this is theft by government.
The IRS can come after me seven years back if I screw up, and they charge me interest. When they screw up, all I get is less than half of my money and the “run around.”
In other words, if I screw up on my taxes, it is fraud, but if government screws up, it is a “mistake” and I am left to foot the bill.
Government should not be able to write laws in which they come out on top and taxpayers lose. They are legalizing theft by government. This law needs changed, and taxpayers need to realize that this law legalizes theft by government.
Also, since it is in our state constitution that property taxes can be no more than 1 percent assessed value, my constitutional rights were violated due to the wrong assessment. I believe that government officials have forgotten who is their boss.
It is time citizens stand up and fight this huge bureaucracy that has forgotten its proper role, which is to guarantee life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Government's role seems to have changed to over-taxation, over-regulation, and passage of laws that legalize tyranny.
I urge all citizens to review your taxes and where that money goes. Contact your representatives and reminds them who they work for. The larger and more powerful government gets, they smaller our freedoms and rights become. We are not only paying for this to happen with our tax money, but we are paying for it with our children's and grandchildren's liberty!
