For a small nonprofit whose only purpose is to support the IPFW Women’s Studies Program and its students, retaining women’s studies is a very positive consequence of IPFW’s reorganization. Community Friends of Women’s Studies, Inc. has existed since 2005, quietly raising funds and sharing them with women and men students enrolled in WOST classes. Over the years the support has come in the form of emergency financial aid, awards for academic excellence; funds for needed, expensive textbooks; prizes for excellent writing, social activism; and funds to encourage students to strive toward completing the women’s studies degree.

At the beginning of next year, instead of executing an “orderly dissolution” of CFWS, Inc. its board of directors will continue to serve IPFW students who are “prepared to take their place in society to make significant contributions that benefit everyone.”

Of course, as a community organization, the community is welcome and encouraged to join us in this service by becoming members of the organization or making a charitable donation.

Carol Butler, president CFWS, Inc.
