New Haven Police responded to the report of a vehicle theft at 9 p.m. Saturday from a Speedway gas station in the 100 block of Lincoln Highway East, according to a police report.

The owner of the vehicle was following the stolen vehicle, a 2007 Toyota Avalon, and the vehicle the suspect arrived in, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, the report said.

Officers caught up with the Impala in the area of Maplecrest Road and Lake Avenue, where the driver refused to stop and engaged police in a short pursuit, resulting in the Impala crashing into a house in the 1300 block of Reed Road. The driver fled the scene on foot and eventually taken into custody.

The stolen Toyota Avalon was never located by officers, who also learned the Impala was a stolen vehicle from Fort Wayne.

Jamal T. Johnson, 18, of the 2100 block of St. Marys Avenue, was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, auto theft, leaving the scene of an accident, criminal recklessness and operating a motor vehicle without ever having received a license. Johnson received no injuries.
