A report of gunshots early this morning led police officers to a dead man, according to a police report.

Fort Wayne Police responded to the call at 12:18 a.m. today in the 900 block of Francis Street and found a man on the ground next to the intersection of Francis Street and East Washington Boulevard.

The man appeared to be in critical condition suffering from gunshot wounds, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Detectives are going door to door, searching for anyone who may have witnessed the shooting, and crime scene units are canvassing the area. A K9 unit on scene attempted to locate anyone who may have fled the area, and detectives are checking with nearby businesses to see if there is any surveillance video.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Allen County Coroner's Office, which will release cause and manner of death and the man's identity.

Anyone with information should call the police department at 427-1222.
