A homeless man has been charged with burglarizing a woman's vehicle and removing money from it earlier this month.
Ryan V. Michels, 18, was charged Tuesday in Allen Superior Court with burglary, a Level 4 felony, and theft, a Level 6 felony, according to court documents.
Police officers responded to a burglary call at 7:49 a.m. May 6 on Radford Court, where a woman reported her purse was taken from her vehicle overnight while it was parked inside the attached garage. The woman's husband told police he had come home at 3:40 a.m., and nothing had been disturbed and the house was secured.
Michels, who had been arrested for a separate incident, allegedly had the woman's purse in his possession. When interviewed by police, Michels said he and another man took $500 from a purse from a car parked in the driveway, according to a probable-cause affidavit.
The woman said her vehicle was parked in the garage, and a phone app connected to the garage door said it was opened at 5:53 a.m. She also said she had $800 in cash in two bank envelopes, $100 cash in another envelope, $300 in Menards rebates, $40 in her wallet and $11 in the van console, the affidavit said.
