Vincent L. Smith, 57, of the 3700 block of E. Washington Boulevard, was charged Wednesday in Allen Superior Court with robbery resulting in bodily injury, a Level 3 felony, and a misdemeanor count of interference with reporting a crime, according to court documents.

The victim told police he was driving to check on his business on April 6 when he saw Smith walking westbound on Wayne Trace and then allegedly remove the chain to the gate of the blue Tokheim building, enter the property, and replace the chain. The victim also told police he recognized Smith from surveillance video of an alleged theft and attempted to block the gate when Smith came out of the building, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

The victim told Smith he was going to call 911, and Smith allegedly grabbed the phone and put it in his pocket, pushing the victim to the ground. When the victim returned to his vehicle, Smith allegedly hit him in the back of the head with a rock or other hard object, resulting in a 1/2-inch laceration. The victim said he removed his belt to protect himself.

After Smith left the property, the victim followed him in his vehicle. Smith allegedly told the victim to stop following him. The victim asked Smith to return the phone. Smith allegedly said, "No, I'm going to keep it," the affidavit said.
