The Mallards' big line is Justin Kovacs, Chris Francis and Michael Parks... This series will be all about the goaltenders... Before last weekend, Quad City had won three games in a row, all by one goal, against the Komets, and that was because of goaltender C.J. Motte... Motte is excellent but doesn't always get a lot of defensive help... He seems to stop three or four breakaways from the Komets every game... That's largely because he forces the shooter to make the first move and doesn't give them anything to shoot at... He had excellent numbers against the Komets and the rest of the Quad City goaltenders struggled horribly... Looking inside the numbers, the Komets might have won nine or 10 regular-season games against the Mallards except for Motte... Three of Quad City's four wins against Fort Wayne were by one goal, while the Komets won seven of their eight games by a combined 24 goals... The Mallards are a solid but not great team. They aren't the fastest, toughest or biggest, but they aren't bad in any area except the power play where they really struggle, including scoring four goals in 39 attempts against the Komets... The Komets were 4-1-1 at Quad City this season and won the series 8-4... The Mallards have opportunistic forwards who will look for home run passes for breakaways if the Komets let them, particularly Sam Warning and Chris Francis... The Komets significantly out-shot the Mallards in 11 of the 12 games during the season series, including five times when they held them to fewer than 30 shots... The Komets had 35 or more shots against the Mallards seven times... The Fort Wayne forecheck is usually very effective in forcing turnovers against the Mallards' defense... Most of the Komets' scoring chances and goals against Motte were because of that... With such a bad power play, the Mallards lack offense and must play a defensive style... The Komets scored 50 goals this season against the Mallards who scored only 28 against the Komets.
