BLOOMINGTON – Assembly Hall is one of the most famous basketball arenas in America. It is also one of the least fan friendly.

Yes, Hoosier officials just spent $40 million to renovate it, and added a lot of cool features in the process, but there are issues with the steep stairs and towering balcony heights that only detonation can fix.

Given a new facility would run well in excess of $500 million, that ain’t happening.

But what makes Assembly Hall resonate so stronger with college basketball fans?

WTIU Television’s “Assembly Hall: Pride of Indiana” is a documentary set to explore the mystique of the place. It will premiere March 7 at 8 p.m. on WTIU

Officials once considered putting an ice hockey rink under the basketball court. According to legend, then basketball coach Bob Knight shot that down — as he did so many things.

Early on, Assembly Hall it was used for concerts, which would have been fine if the acoustics allowed you to hear what was being played, and the seating permitted comfortable viewing.

They did not.

A circus came to Assembly Hall. The event went so badly that the circus company vowed never to return.

The documentary provides insight from IU athletic director Fred Glass, former Hoosier All-American and Pacers coach Bobby “Slick” Leonard, the screenwriter and producer of the movie Hoosiers, Angelo Pizzo, and more.
