Snap judgements have the anti-baconator grumpy

Thursday, August 28, 2014 12:01 am
Week 1 never ceases to amaze The Pig when it comes to sweeping generalizations of programs after just 48 minutes of football. This team is great.

This team is horrible.

This team has no chance.

People love to judge a program on one game, much like people love to judge this particular swine when he is rolling in a big slop of mud to stay cool.

So let The Pig lay down some knowledge on the uneducated with some of the most common thoughts he heard coming out of last Friday.

Premature outlook: Bishop Luers is back

Do not get The Pig wrong, he doesn't think there is any way that the Knights go winless in the regular season. In fact, The Pig truly believes that Bishop Luers will finish in the top three in the SAC in 2014.

But what The Pig is not ready to do is anoint Bishop Luers as a state contender in Class 3A. The Knights had Snider beat last week and couldn't close the deal, what that tells The Pig is that the team is good enough to play with the best, but not good enough to knock them out. It's a step up from last year, but not to the top step.

The Pig is sure coaches at Bishop Luers agree, because, in all honesty, who wouldn't agree with yours truly? The Knights have a ways to go before they are “Bishop Luers” again.

Premature outlook: No one in the NHC can stop Homestead's offense

The record-breaking night last Friday for the Spartans' offensive attack brought out those already handing the NHC title to Coach Chad Zolman's squad.

The performance was definitely impressive, with the offense racking up 490 yards against Huntington North, but 437 of those came through the air. The Spartans averaged just 2.3 yards per carry on the ground, a paltry number that will need to improve.

Now, there are not many teams that are going to be able to match up with the wealth of passing options Homestead can array on the field, but The Pig will predict there will be at least two league games this season where Sparty will have to be able to run the ball.

Being able to get it going on the ground will be key going forward.

Premature outlook North Side is done

Well, that didn't take long for people to jump off the North Side bandwagon, did it? One defeat to a solid Concordia Lutheran team and all of a sudden, the Redskins are SAC has-beens.

Last year, North Side narrowly knocked off the Cadets in Week 1 by five, then went on to win the league championship. While The Pig does not believe the Redskins will repeat as SAC champs, this is not a squad that is sliding to the bottom of the standings.

North Side has trouble executing in short yardage situations and needs to shore up its defensive front that struggled mightily against the Cadets, but this is still a squad with plenty of playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Overall, this is a young group, and it may just be that this team needs longer to get it going. But by no means is North Side done for.

Perception: Leo will have competition in the ACAC

The Pig truly wants to believe this is true, really he does. But when a program has won 33 of its last 34 league games like the Lions have, this swine needs more proof than Coach Jared Sauder's squad dropping a close one to a non-conference foe in Norwell.

There are some impressive-looking teams in the ACAC this year in Woodlan and Heritage, both of whom could give Leo a run to be league champion. But until those teams match up on the field, The Pig is not about to say all of a sudden this conference is wide open.

We may have to wait awhile to find out, with Leo set to play Heritage and Woodlan back-to-back in weeks 6 and 7.
