The TinCaps moved to one game behind in the race for the Eastern Division wildcard playoff spot on Thursday. John Nester's RBI-single in the bottom of the 8th inning lifted Fort Wayne to a 2-1 win over West Michigan at Parkview Field. Dayton lost at home to Lansing on Thursday to allow the TinCaps to gain ground for the final playoff spot.
Ryan Butler earned his 8th save of the season by pitching the 9th inning and stranding the tying run at third.
Fort Wayne got solid pitching all night. Starter Ronald Herrera allowed one run on three hits in five innings. He was replaced by Colby Blueberg who pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball without allowing a hit.
Eric Yardley, who picked up the win, followed Blueberg to the hill and allowed one hit and no runs in 1 1/3 innings. That set the stage for Butler in the 9th. Yardley is 2-4 this season.
The TinCaps outhit the Lugnuts 8-5 with Franmil Reyes and Nick Schulz getting two each. Others collecting safeties for Fort Wayne were Jake Bauers, Nester, Henry Charles and Norwell graduate Josh VanMeter.
