Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival Hoosier Tour rolls into GM

Wednesday, August 27, 2014 - 9:10 am

Tuesday morning the Fort Wayne GM Assembly Plant was the morning stop for the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival Hoosier Tour.

The car tour, which happens annually around this time, promotes the ACD festival in Auburn, which takes place over Labor Day weekend.

Forty cars participated in the tour this year and GM employees had a very colorful lineup in their parking lot.

James Bartlett, who was driving a 1935 Auburn Supercharged Convertible Sedan, took some time out of the plant tour to tweak his engine.

Bartlett, of Tomball, Texas, said he had only recently had the engine put back into the car. He has owned the car since 1994 and, like most owners of vintage cars, knows a lot of the mechanics.

Bartlett said when you own a car that old it is hard to find a mechanic who is knowledgeable about their idiosyncrasies. The car had been losing electrical power, but he knew just what brush to replace to make the necessary fix.

Bartlett said he first fell in love with the car around 1960. It was owned by the father of his high school sweetheart who was a car collector, but it wasn't until 1994 that he purchased the vehicle.

Bartlett said he is a collector. The Auburn is just one of several in his collection. He prefers the teens to the 1920s.

Saturday in Auburn there will be the annual parade at 1 p.m., which will feature many more of the vintage automobiles.
