Bounty hunters allegedly involved in deadly Kosciusko shooting

Tuesday, August 26, 2014 - 2:28 pm

Kosciusko County officials have released more information about a triple shooting there Monday night that killed one man.

Gary W. Helman, 56, of 9174 E. Doswell Drive, Cromwell, was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, three men, purportedly bounty hunters, went onto Helman's property shortly before 7 p.m. Monday. The three have been identified as Daniel Foster, 43, of LaPorte; Michael C. Thomas, 36, of Osceola; and Tad Martin of Osceola.

"The bounty hunters were attempting to serve an active felony warrant on Helman for 'failure to appear' issued from Kosciusko County. Helman's original warrants had stemmed from felony charges of resisting law enforcement and battery resulting in bodily injury," according to a Kosciusko County news release.

The bounty hunters saw Helman on the back deck of his home. A gun battle erupted with rounds fired inside and outside the home.

Also struck by gunfire were Gary Helman's twin brother, Larry D. Helman, and Martin, one of the bounty hunters. Both were found in the rear of the home; Gary Helman was found in a rear bedroom.

Larry Helman and Martin were taken to hospitals in Fort Wayne in serious condition.

The shooting incident is still under investigation.
