Crash kills Kendallville man

Sunday, August 24, 2014 - 7:27 pm

The Indiana State Police is investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Indiana 4, near Hudson late Saturday night that resulted in the death of a man from Kendallville.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Grant Crabtree indicated that at around 11 p.m., a 1997 BMW driven by 23-year-old Noe Munoz-Rubio of rural Orland was traveling eastbound on Indiana 4 at County Road 11 when it left the south side of the road.

The BMW rolled over and struck a tree before it came to a rest on its top. Munoz-Rubio, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time, was trapped and had to be extricated by the Ashley Fire Department, according to an ISP news release. He was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne by Samaritan helicopter for head, neck and facial injuries. His condition is unknown to police.

Munoz-Rubio's passenger, 24-year-old Christopher J. Hatch of Kendallville was ejected from the vehicle in the crash. He was reportedly not wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene by the DeKalb County coroner; alcohol is believed to have been a factor in this crash, which is still under investigation, according to the release.

The State Police was assisted by the DeKalb and Steuben County sheriff departments, the Ashley Police and Fire departments, DeKalb County EMS, DeKalb County coroner and Samaritan.
