The TinCaps dug themselves into a hole early and couldn't get out of it Friday at Parkview Field. Lake County scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to beat Fort Wayne 8-5.
TinCaps' starter Cody Hebner, 1-2, didn't get past the first inning. Hebner allowed four hits and two walks to the Captains. The big blow was a two-out grand slam by Grant Fink. The grand slam was preceded by an error by third baseman Dustin Peterson which would have gotten Fort Wayne out of the inning with only a 2-0 deficit.
Fernando Perez homered in the bottom of the first to trim the margin to 7-1. It was Perez's second home run in as many nights and 11th of the season.
The score remained 7-1 until the fifth when each team tallied a run. The TinCaps' run scored on three walks and a balk.
Fort Wayne scored three times in the seventh inning to make it 8-5. Norwell graduate Josh VanMeter had an RBI single and Perez drove in two with a single to center. Perez's single put runners at first and third with one out. Lake County relief pitcher Justin Brantley struck out Franmil Reyes and Jake Bauers to prevent further damage.
The TinCaps went down in order in the 8th and 9th innings to end the game.
Perez and VanMeter each had two hits for Fort Wayne, which had six in the game. Richardson and Nick Schulz accounted for the other hits.
The teams meet again at 7:05 Saturday at Parkview Field. Kyle Lloyd will start on the mound for Fort Wayne while Lake County will send Dace Kime to the hill. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380-AM and seen on Xfinity Ch. 81.
