A Fort Wayne Police detective came home Tuesday afternoon to find himself facing down a trio of pit bulls who already had pinned down a woman walking a small dog and a motorist trying to help her.According to police reports, when he arrived home, he found a truck stopped askew in the street, its driver calling for help. He later learned that the three pit bulls had been after a woman walking a small dog, and the driver was trying to interpose his truck between her and the dogs.

When the detective got out of his car, the dogs came for him. He reported that he emptied a 4-ounce can of chemical spray at the dogs with no discernible effect. He pulled his handgun, a 9-mm pistol, and fired a round, hitting one dog and scaring all three away.

Other officer soon arrived, and they tracked the wounded dog to a home in the 5500 block of Wald Road. There police and officers from Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control found two men. Police reported they were confrontational. Both were cited by Animal Control for allowing a nuisance animal to run loose.
