IPFW sophomore continues to improve

Tuesday, March 11, 2014 - 12:01 am

At 6-foot-5 with shoulders like a pick-up truck and legs that can jump over almost any snowbank, Andy Sellan passes the eye test for what a volleyball player should look like. Then he goes out and plays and coaches start to drool.

``He's so strong, and he hits such a heavy ball,'' IPFW coach Arnie Ball said. ``He's just a sophomore, and he has no idea how good he can be. Physically, he's above anybody we've got.''

But he's getting there. Sellan was IPFW's most-improved player last year, and he's continuing that progression each week this season. His all-around game is getting stronger, and his hitting ability has been almost unstoppable. He hit 18 kills last week against No. 14 Ohio State in a five-match victory.

As more teams concentrate on stopping senior all-America candidate Eddie Rivera, that leaves fewer blockers to face Sellan. He has all the potential to be IPFW's next great hitter.

``It all depends on everyone else I play with,'' Sellan said. ``We talk about how we have a really deep team, and it's in practice when we get better. As everyone else gets better, I can only get better.''

Sellan will get a chance at a few more swings tonight when the No. 12-ranked Volleydons play at No. 14 Ball State. The Cardinals beat the Volleydons 3-2 on Jan. 31 in Fort Wayne. At stake is second place in the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association as IPFW, Ball State and No. 11 Lewis are all tied at 4-2 behind No. 1 Loyola, 8-0.
