Redskins win first sectional championship since 2010

Sunday, March 9, 2014 - 12:35 am

KENDALLVILLE – Tre'Vion Crews scored 20 points and backcourt mate Sean McGee added 18 as North Side overcame serious foul trouble to knock off Carroll 63-40 in the Class 4A East Noble Sectional championship on Saturday night.

The title is the Redskins' first since 2010 and 25th overall in school history.

No. 4-ranked North Side (24-1) found itself in dire straits in the first quarter when three of its top big men – Oosha Mitchell, Mike Davis and Myluv Sutton – picked up two fouls.

Redskins coach Shabaz Khaliq had to preach patience with his frontcourt players and rely on a small lineup to survive the first half.

“It was tough the first part of the game when we had foul trouble,” Khaliq said. “Our guys overcame that adversity and really were able to keep the lead.”

Despite the foul problems, North Side turned a three-point first quarter lead into a 29-16 advantage at halftime by holding Carroll to just four points in the second quarter.

The lead grew to as many as 15 points in the third quarter before the Chargers (xx-x) trimmed the lead to as few as eight, but North Side went on a run that was capped by a Crews three-pointer at the buzzer to put the Redskins up 15.

Carroll was never able to seriously threaten the lead again.

North Side was able to triumph despite limited contributions from Davis, who was battling an illness. The senior finished with zero points, four rebounds and four fouls.

Carroll was led by Jeremy Kalonji's 20 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line. Chandler White added 14 in defeat.

The Redskins hit 17-of-20 free throws for the game.

North Side advances to the Marion Regional where it will play third-ranked Hamilton Southeastern (22-3) in the second semifinal at approximately noon next Saturday.
