Carroll finishes second, Jay County third

Monday, March 10, 2014 - 3:41 am

There wasn't a lot of drama at the top for the Concordia Lutheran Sectional for gymnastics on Saturday, but there was a whole lot in the middle.

No. 2-ranked Bishop Dwenger won its seventh consecutive sectional title with a 112.200 score, followed by No. 9 Carroll with a 106.775. The real competition came for third place and the final spot in Friday's Huntington North Regional. Jay County scored 102.175 to edge Homestead's 101.725, Huntington North's 101.175 and Northrop's 100.400.

The top three teams and top six individuals in each event advance to the regional.

The top individual winners were Maria Trahin of Bishop Dwenger who won the vault with a 9.575, the bars with a 9.625 and the all-around with a 36.7. Teammate Katy Linvill won the beam with a 9.525 and finished second in the all-around in 37.55. Dwenger's Alexis Eddy also won the floor exercise with a 9.575.

Carroll was led by Sydney Ulrey's 36.35 in the all-around, Delaney Garland's 9.4 on the vault and Ulrey and Morgan Moehle scoring 9.25 on the beam.

Other top local individual performances include Lauren Wagner of Northrop scoring 35.625 in the all-around, and Homestead's Katelynn Chaffee and Heritage's Rachael Anderson advancing with a 9.325 on the vault.

With Trahin, Linvill, Eddy, Grace Gillig, Andrea Nix and Alena Chilian the Saints placed at least three competitors in the top eight of each event.

``We still have a little bit that we can improve upon,'' Saints coach Rose Nix said. ``I think the kids are finally getting into the rhythm of having normal practices, the normal routine of things. They are all hard workers and they push each other, which is good, in a friendly way.''
