Mastodons pull away in first half and never look back

Saturday, March 8, 2014 - 11:27 pm

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - IPFW played about as well as anyone could expect to open its 2014 postseason Thursday.

Mastodon senior forward Luis Jacobo scored 19 points and freshman guard Mo Evans added 13, as No. 2 seed IPFW smoked No. 7 seed IUPUI 85-47 in front of 3,153 fans at Sioux Falls Arena in the opening quarterfinal in the 2014 Summit League Tournament.

The win advanced the Mastodons to the semifinals for the second consecutive year.

The win ties the school record for most wins in a season, while the 38-point margin of victory ties for the second-largest margin of victory in Summit League Tournament history, and the highest since the tournament moved to Sioux Falls.

Steve Forbes pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go with his 11 points, while Joe Edwards scored 10. Three others - Joe Reed (9), Michael Kibiloski (8), and Pierre Bland (7) - came within a field goal of reaching double-figure scoring.

IPFW (23-9) out-rebounded IUPUI 39-to-23, while dishing out 19 assists - four each from Pierre Bland and Joe Edwards. The Mastodons hit 35-of-61 shots (57.4 percent) from the field, and 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from long range.

The teams jockeyed with the lead for the first eight minutes of the game, with all three tie scores and four lead changes coming during that span. The Mastodons took the lead for good in the game on a Reed lay-in with 12:01 remaining on the first half clock.

IUPUI cut the deficit to four with 8:23 to play at 22-18, before the Mastodons ran off 10 consecutive points to lead by double-digits, and took an 18-point, 40-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After a Mitch Patton lay-in by the Jaguars cut the gap to 16, IPFW ran off nine straight points to lead by 25 following an Edwards fastbreak dunk, and never looked back. The final margin of 38 came on the game's final basket, a three-pointer by Herbert Graham with just under a minute to play.

Isaiah McCray picked up three steals, while Kibiloski and Evans each had a blocked shot in the victory.

Patton led IUPUI with 18 points, while Ian Chiles scored 12. Marcellus Barksdale pulled down eight rebounds, while dishing out three assists - both team-highs.

The Mastodons will face the winner of South Dakota State and Western Illinois Monday at 9:30 p.m. (EST).
