The Indiana Commission for Women presented Allen County Health Commissioner Dr. Deborah McMahan with a 2014 Torchbearer Award on Wednesday at its 10th annual ceremony at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis. The award honors women from around the state who have overcome obstacles and made Indiana a better place to live, work and raise a family, according to a news release.
“Indiana Torchbearers are those women who have been pioneers throughout their lives or who have stepped forward as leaders by breaking down barriers to women’s full participation,” said Kristin Garvey, executive director for the Indiana Commission for Women, in the release. “These women have become true beacons of light and their stories of courage, perseverance and compassion create a lasting legacy of inspiration for us all.”
Appointed health commissioner in 2000, McMahan oversees the department’s mission of promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing injury and disease. She is a state-licensed physician and a member of the Fort Wayne Medical Society. She is also a member of the boards of the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, the Urban League, and Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County.
