The Wednesday afternoon death of a man found by law enforcement officials after a standoff in Arcola is under investigation.
The standoff could have been the end result of an armed robbery of a Fort Wayne liquor store that reportedly took place earlier that afternoon, according to Jeremy Tinkel, a spokesman for the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
According to WANE-TV, the S&V Liquors store in the 9000 block of Illinois Road was robbed at around 1:10 p.m. by a man reportedly wearing a “Grim Reaper” mask.
That man reportedly fled in a pickup with no bed, according to WANE.
The sheriff’s department responded to an apartment complex in the 11400 block of Arcola Road around 3:30 p.m., Tinkel said, in reference to “a male who was holed up inside an apartment.”
Tinkel said hostage negotiators and the SWAT team were deployed to the scene under the impression that the person inside could have been involved with the liquor store robbery, and law enforcement attempted to make contact.
After a lengthy period of no response, SWAT members entered a residence and found a dead man around 5:15 p.m., Tinkel said.
“He was deceased when we entered the apartment,” Tinkel said, adding that the Allen County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the man and the cause and manner of death.
The incident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office, sheriff’s dDepartment and Fort Wayne Police Department.
