Hoosiers blow 12-point lead down the stretch

Thursday, February 13, 2014 - 12:01 am

BLOOMINGTON – What do you say when a game that was there for the taking is lost in stunning fashion?

If you’re Indiana senior swingman Will Sheehey, not much.

Indiana’s 66-65 loss to Penn State Wednesday night came when the Hoosiers were outscored 15-2 in the final 3:30. They committed turnovers on their last three in-bounds plays to give the Nittany Lions the opening they needed.

Sheehey had 12 points, three assists, three turnovers, one steal and no rebounds in 35 minutes.

It wasn’t enough. IU is 14-10 overall and 4-7 in the Big Ten. Penn State, which had lost to the Hoosiers last month in Happy Valley, is 13-12 and 4-8.

Here are Sheehey’s comments after the game:

What happened on those in-bounds plays?

“We panicked. We didn’t stay true to our scouting report.”

Did you feel it snowballing at the end?

“We just didn’t execute. You have to play each possession like it’s the last possession.”

Did you guys sense panic at the end, and when?

“We just didn’t execute. We didn’t stick to the scouting report. We just didn’t make plays at the end.”
