DB brings potential to the Hoosiers

Monday, February 03, 2014 12:01 am
The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.Here is today's Indiana featured commit:Position: Cornerback

High School: Carver High School in Columbus, Georgia

Height: 5-foot-10

Weight: 190 pounds

Commitment date: February 2, 2014

Other scholarship offers: 12, including BYU, Kansas State, Southern Miss and Vanderbilt.

Ranking: Rated a two-star recruit by Rivals.com; rated a two-star prospect by Scout.com.

Indiana depth chart at position: Senior Tim Bennett, redshirt junior Michael Hunter, senior Kenny Mullen, redshirt senior Brian Williams.

Scouting report: With the Indiana defense coming off a woeful few seasons defending the pass, anytime that you can add a body to the defensive secondary it is a good thing. Walton coming on board does not represent a huge get in terms of college-ready talent, but another solid prospect who should grow throughout his career in Bloomington. Walton had offers from solid programs such as Vanderbilt and Kansas State, so the Hoosiers did grab the prospect away from some respectable teams. Like every other defensive back coming in this cycle, Walton will get a shot to prove he can cover better than the returning cornerbacks on the roster. If he can show a propensity to do that, he will see early playing time.
