Massive DT helps out a position of need for Fighting Irish

Monday, February 03, 2014 12:01 am
The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.Here is today's Notre Dame featured commit:Position: Defensive tackle

High School: St. Joseph by the Sea High School in Staten Island, New York

Height: 6-foot-5

Weight: 305 pounds

Commitment date: January 24, 2014

Other scholarship offers: UConn, Pittsburgh, Rutgers.

Ranking: Rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and the No. 7 player in the state of New York; rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com and the No. 66 defensive tackle in the country.

Notre Dame depth chart at position: Sophomore Jarron Jones, sophomore Tony Springmann.

Scouting report: Mokwuah will not be one of the most talked-about recruits on Signing Day heading to South Bend, but he may be one of the most important. Notre Dame is in desperate need of depth in the middle of the defensive line, and Mokwuah adds that. An aggressive, sometimes even violent player, Mokwuah is a ferocious and tenacious player that brings it on every snap. Much like Louis Nix III, Mokwuah’s size commands double teams and it is likely he will get even bigger once he gets on campus. Mokwuah will need to work on his footwork and overall ability to get off blocks and pursue the ball, but he is what the Fighting Irish need in terms of an interior lineman that can clog up space.
