Here's your shocker: the NFL is NONprofit

While Mike Marin is off touring retirement communities, I'll try my best to keep your attention in my role of fill-in Marinator. However, I'm not in my golden years, so I can't get away with voicing my potentially destructive opinion and expect readers to give me a free pass.

On the other hand, as we saw with Phil Robertson from “Duck Dynasty,” age doesn't pardon you from remarks that some may view as offensive. So, since age is “just a number,” I'm going to let it rip. It's not as if you read Marinating for stock quotes.

All you sports fans out there, casual and extreme, I'm going to fill you in on an aspect of sports that you might not be aware of: The NFL is categorized as nonprofit! You read that right. While Jerry Lewis was out there busting his hump on the MDA Telethon (until his departure in 2011) to the tune of raising about $1 million each year, the NFL was sitting back and raking in about $9 billion per year in revenue.

The NFL, NHL and PGA all classify themselves as nonprofits to keep federal taxes from being withheld from earnings. Major League Baseball actually got it right, and I'm not referring to keeping Pete Rose out of the Hall of Fame. I'm referring to the league not being tax-exempt. They filed for a change in tax status in 2007.

So this Sunday, when you're watching your favorite “super” football player drop a pass and you start complaining about his megacontract, you now have something else to throw your remote at the TV for. Next time you're considering dropping $400 to take the family to a game, save your money and buy that box of Girl Scout cookies instead.
