Kops 4 Kids helps kids in need at Christmastime

Thursday, December 12, 2013 - 8:39 am

Fort Wayne Patrol Officer Cameron Norris joined several Allen County law enforcement members at the Meijer store on Lima Road on Wednesday afternoon for a special mission. Norris and the rest of the group are members of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge and were taking part in the annual Kops 4 Kids event.

For the past 20 years the organization has helped families in need at Christmas by taking their children shopping for clothing and at least one toy. Each child is given $100 to spend. Meijer contributes annually to the cause while other donations are solicited from local businesses and private donations. Mitch McKinney, president of the F.O.P., said donations have been down this year. Some of the local businesses that have contributed in the past have not stepped up this year.

Families selected for the program are usually those who have not had help from any other organization. Once a family has been helped they cannot reapply for two years.
