For the first time in several years, the city of Fort Wayne may soon have a public safety director. The administration of Mayor Tom Henry is expected to introduce an ordinance at Tuesday’s City Council meeting that would authorize the high-level position, which would supervise the police and fire departments and other areas dealing with public safety.
Administration officials were unavailable for comment, but Councilman Russ Jehl, R-2nd, said Henry told him recently he intended to reinstate the position.
“We’ve never had one since I’ve been on council and I’m not sure what (the position) would do, so I can’t judge whether it would be a good idea,” Jehl said.
Police Chief Rusty York, whose position would be under the safety director, said he could not discuss the proposal.
The ordinance does not specify the position’s salary.
