Did you know November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month as well as National Family Caregivers month? During this month take a moment to think about someone you know affected with Alzheimer’s (there are 5.2 million Americans) and also think of their families (approximately 15.2 million people) who are providing care and support for them. It is the perfect time to contact the Alzheimer’s Association at 1-800-272-3900 to find out about education and support services available in our community; research trial match program for those with dementia as well as those with healthy brains and volunteer opportunities.

You might also contact Rep. Marlin Stutzman and remind him that he can increase his knowledge about how Alzheimer’s affects Americans, including 120,000 Hoosiers, by joining the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease (currently 172 members of the House and the Senate belong).

Also remind him the HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act (HR 1507) to promote services for early diagnosis and care planning is still seeking his name as a co-sponsor. Rep. Stutzman’s office can be reached at 424-3041 in Fort Wayne or 202-225-4436 in Washington, D.C.

Don’t let November pass by without a positive action to improve the life of those living with Alzheimer’s and their families.

Jana Powell, Alzheimer’s Association ambassador to Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District
