Attackers tackle delivery driver, run off empty-handed in Waynedale

Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 2:48 pm

A pizza delivery driver was mugged and clubbed late Monday by two men in Waynedale who tried to rob him, but the driver fought back. The robbers ran off without stealing anything from the driver, according to a report from Fort Wayne police.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, the driver returned to the pizza shop where he works, and the manager called police. The driver told police that he had tried to deliver a $64 order to an apartment in a complex off Lower Huntington Road. He knocked on the door several times, but received no answer.

As he walked back to his car, he told police, two men converged on him. He was struck on his head by a hard object, which police later said left a mark consistent with the butt of a handgun. The men tried to tackle the driver, but he fought back. He told police that he clamped one of his attackers in a headlock, and the other started kicking him. The would-be robbers ran off.

Police noted that the driver had a large bruise and a 3-inch cut on his head. He described his attackers as being black males, both about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 140 pounds, wearing black hoodies and dark pants. However, he said he could not identify the suspects he described.
