INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Republicans are taking steps to fill the seat being vacated by a longtime lawmaker from northeastern Indiana.

Rep. Phyllis Pond of New Haven announced last week she was retiring because she suffers from pulmonary fibrosis. Her resignation takes effect Oct. 15 after close to four decades in the Indiana House of Representatives.

Indiana GOP Chairman Tim Berry said Tuesday that a party caucus to select someone to fill out the remaining year of Pond's term will be held Oct. 8 at the Allen County Republican Headquarters. He says candidates for the seat must notify the party by Oct. 4.
