Suspicious object near downtown Taco Bell not a threat

Patrons of the downtown Taco Bell watched Fort Wayne Police investigate a report of a suspicious object Wednesday afternoon across the parking lot from the restaurant at 340 W. Jefferson Blvd.

According to FWPD public information officer Michael Joyner, a contractor for AEP had been testing for underground electrical cables near the downtown Taco Bell drive-through. The area is slated for an upcoming sewer project. He responded to an emergency call while he was in the middle of testing and forgot his test pack, which had some electrical wires sticking out of it. Around 1:55 p.m., someone spotted the bag and called police.

Fairfield Avenue between Washington and Jefferson boulevards was closed until about 3 p.m., when the investigation was concluded. A member of the FWPD who had prior experience with line work recognized what the pack was and called AEP, which in turn called the contractor back to the scene to pick up his equipment.
