The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called before 9 a.m. Thursday to a fire in the 3200 block of Senate Avenue and reported a double fatality there.
The call about a house fire came in at 8:47 a.m., according to fire department spokeswoman Stacey Fleming.
Deputy Commander Mark Nelson of the Fort Wayne Fire Department said that firefighters arrived at 8:50 a.m., entered the burning house quickly and found the first body 2 minutes after entering the home. The second body was 7 minutes later, he said.
A dog also perished in the incident, according to Fleming, via a news release.
About an hour after firefighters arrived at the fire, Nelson described it as having caused moderate damage to the home. Firefighters were ventilating the house with large fans to try to drive smoke from the structure.
The damage assessment was later upgraded to heavy fire and smoke damage, as well as moderate water damage.
No firefighters were injured in the fire.
The Allen County prosecutor's office was notified because of the fatalities, as were a Fort Wayne Police Department homicide detective, the FWPD Crime Scene Unit and the Allen County Coroner's Office. The coroner's office will conduct autopsies Friday to determine a cause of death and potentially release the identities of those who died.
