Hundreds turned out for the annual Family Fun Day on Tuesday at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, just one of the Three Rivers Festival events. Even with highs in the 80s, full sun and high humidity, organizers estimated more than 1,000 attended the day of entertainment downtown. Snow cones, water activities and cool shade beneath the garden's greenery helped keep visitors stay cool. Northern Indiana is under a hazardous weather outlook with high temperatures in the low 90s Wednesday combined with high humidity. The combination will produce heat indexes in the upper 90s in the afternoon. Afternoon heat indexes will reach 100 Thursday-Friday before storms and a cold front come through.

On Tuesday, Animal Care & Control issued a hot weather alert for animal owners. When possible, bring pets into an area of the home that has air-conditioning or fans. Make sure pets have a sheltered place outside to rest and quantities of fresh water in case the containers are spilled. Do not bring pets to the festival.

Coming Monday: Health Sentinel discusses how to cope with the heat and take food precautions, in Features.
