The News-Sentinel stopped out to Lakeside Park for Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control's Picture Your Pet on Sunday, as part of the Fort Wayne Newspapers Three Rivers Festival fun.
Picture Your Pet is a professional photo shoot for families with pets to benefit animal safety education. For $15, participants can get a 5x7 photo and reprint waiter. There are also additional photo packages. Photos are taken by Jim McKinley Photography.
We asked Peggy Bender, education and outreach specialist at Animal Care and Control, a few questions about the event. Read what she had to say below.
The News-Sentinel (NS): How has the event gone so far?
Peggy Bender (PB): We are an hour into Picture Your Pet (4 p.m. Sunday, July 14) and the crowd has been amazing. Obviously, everyone wanted to get here and try to be the first ones in, and we have had a steady pace and the dogs are incredible as well.
NS: How has the weather effected the event?
PB: Every year it's warm but here at Lakeside Park we have a breeze coming off of the pond and we have shade trees and lots of water for the animals. The average wait time tends to be less than 10 minutes. We always tell anyone who has an overheated animal to get into their car and turn on the air conditioning on and we will come get them.
NS: What is the procedure when people arrive?
PB: We have people come into the pavilion, some people want to have their photos taken with their dogs; other people just want the photograph of the pet alone. Either way we are happy to accommodate that. Our photographer from Jim McKinley Photography has been doing this with us for many years so we have seen a lot of different personalities and we work through it all.
NS: Anything else you'd like to add?
PB: We will be here Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. and we would love to have people to come out. This is an event that generates needed funds for us to provide bite safety education for all the kids in our community to keep children safe and to help children understand good relationships with dogs.
