TinCaps lose opener in Wisconsin

Domoromo has 2 RBIs, but reliever can't hold FW lead

Thursday, July 11, 2013 - 5:36 pm

The Fort Wayne TinCaps lost the opener of a three-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-6 on Wednesday night in Wisconsin.

Fort Wayne (49-36, 6-13) took a lead in the first inning 1-0 when Dane Phillips doubled Maxx Tissenbaum home off starter Preston Gainey but Wisconsin came back with two runs to take a 2-1 lead in their half of the first off starter Zach Elfin. Two errors by the TinCaps aided Wisconsin.

The TinCaps came right back with three runs in the second to tie it when Luis Domoromo singled home Luis Tejada who had singled and stolen a base, and Tyler Stubblefield doubled Tejada home and Mallex Smith singled Stublefield in. But then the Timber Rattlers (36-47, 8-11) came back with three to regain the lead.

Fort Wayne tied it in the third when Diego Goris and Phillips walked, Tejada singled to load the bases and Domoromo hit a fielder's choice to score Phillips.

The TinCaps took the lead in the fourth when Smith doubled, Tissenbaum singled him to third and Goris grounded out to score Smith.

Elfin left after five innings with a 5-4 lead, but Matthew Chabot could not hold the advantage. He suffered a blown save and took the loss when he gave up two runs in the sixth inning. Triples by Max Walla and Christopher McFarland and a wild pitch by Chabot gave the Timber Rattlers the edge.

Ryan Gibbard got the victory with four scoreless innings of relief.

The two teams play again at 8:05 p.m. Thursday With Max Fried getting the start for Fort Wayne.
