ANDERSON — Central Indiana police say vandals who broke into Anderson's historic Wigwam Complex smashed a window and set off several fire extinguishers inside the building.
Police say they were alerted to Saturday's break-in when the haze created by the discharge of the fire extinguishers set off the shuttered building's fire alarm.
Anderson Police Department Sgt. Freddie Tevis tells The Herald-Bulletin that there were signs of some vandalism inside the building, but the 9,000-seat gymnasium was not damaged.
The Wigwam was built in 1962 and is the world's second-largest high school basketball venue, ranked behind the Fieldhouse in New Castle.
School officials closed the building in 2011 as part of a wider budget-cutting plan that included cutting 65 teachers' jobs.
