The top executive of Lutheran Health Network is leaving to accept a job with Community Health Systems Professional Services Corp.
Joe Dorko, CEO of Lutheran Health Network, will become special projects CEO of the Tennessee-based management company, working on strategic and operational initiatives for affiliated hospitals. Dorko will remain with Lutheran through mid-July, the hospital announced Friday.
The company Dorko will work for is a subsidiary of Community Health Systems, the U.S. hospital group that includes Lutheran Health Network. Community Health Systems is headquartered in Franklin, Tenn., near Nashville.
Dorko was named CEO of Lutheran Health Network in 2010, stepping up from his role as CEO of Lutheran Hospital, a position he had held since 2007. He first joined Lutheran Hospital in 1999 as chief operating officer. During his tenure, significant investments were made to improve the network and the Lutheran Hospital campus including the construction of the Lutheran Heart Pavilion and the Lutheran Orthopedic Hospital, the expansion of the emergency department and the initial growth and development of Lutheran Children's Hospital.
“I have had a great experience serving as chief executive officer of Lutheran Health Network, and before that Lutheran Hospital, and I'm so proud of our many accomplishments over the past 14 years, especially those that have advanced the care provided for our patients,” said Dorko in a release announcing his move to the Community Health Systems management role. “I will truly miss the great employees, volunteers, board members and medical staffs across the organization and I wish them all the best as they continue to move the network forward. The strong leadership in place at each hospital will support continued growth in every measure of success.”
Brian Bauer, CEO of Lutheran Hospital, will serve as the interim CEO for Lutheran Health Network during the transition while also continuing in his current role as CEO of Lutheran Hospital. He has been CEO at Lutheran Hospital since 2011.
Lutheran Health Network is one of the largest healthcare providers in the region with eight separately licensed hospitals and nearly 1,000 licensed beds, including 793 in Allen County alone. The network employs more than 7,000.
