18-year-old swimmer drowns in Indiana lake

Monday, June 17, 2013 - 8:13 am

A Marion teen drowned at Salamonie Reservoir Beach on Sunday.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, officers are investigating the drowning of Jordan Laute, 18, of Marion. At 3:20 p.m. a 911 call was placed to the Huntington County Central Dispatch of a possible drowning . Emergency workers were dispatched along with Indiana conservation officers and the Huntington County dive team, which searched for Laute.

Witnesses said Laute swam past the roped barrier into deep water. Once it became clear Laute was in trouble, witnesses and bystanders tried unsuccessfully to find him. Conservation officers found Laute in 9 feet of water at 6:15 p.m.

Officers remind everyone that the use of personal flotation devices should be worn at all times when boating, swimming, fishing or any other waterborne recreational activity.
