Volunteer help in Oklahoma destruction discouraged – for now

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 - 8:44 am

The American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana reports this morning that a Huntington volunteer will fly to Oklahoma today to provide help with “health services,” but no other volunteer deployments are planned immediately. Jeri Elliott, program manager for emergency services in this region’s Red Cross, said that volunteer organizers in Oklahoma have asked that volunteers not “self-deploy” to try to help recovery efforts.

The message from the devastated area was simple: Give first responders time to do their work.

Elliott said that the area Red Cross is contacting its volunteers to find out who would be able to help if the call comes.
