Briefs: Treat ash trees soon to stop emerald ash borer

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 - 12:01 am

Treat ash trees now

Act now if you want to protect ash trees from the destructive emerald ash borer beetle, Cliff Sadof, a Purdue Cooperative Extension entomologist, says in a Purdue University news release.

Adult borers will emerge soon from ash trees and begin feeding on them and laying eggs, so insecticide treatments need to be applied now to kill beetles before they can lay eggs, Sadof said.

The emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all Indiana counties except 12 in the southeast portion of the state and is almost always lethal to untreated ash trees, the news release said.

Information on identifying infested trees, treatment, advice on hiring a professional arborist and a cost calculator are available on Purdue's website at www.eabindiana.info.

Heart Gallery on exhibit

The Indiana Heart Gallery, an exhibit of 12 large portraits of Indiana children in need of adoption, will be on display Monday-June 10 at the Jorgenson County Family YMCA, 10313 Aboite Center Road.

Viewing times are 5 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 5 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday; and 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, a news release said. There is no charge to see the exhibit.

The Indiana Department of Child Services uses the Heart Gallery to raise awareness about the approximately 1,100 Indiana children in foster care who are in need of adoption, a news release said.
