Briefs: Celebrate downtown this Saturday; make plans to enter RiverFest Cardboard Regatta

The Downtown Improvement District offers discounted and free events the last Saturday of every month. Some of April's events include: free magic demonstrations by Dick Stoner 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at Stoner's Funstore; half-price admission to The History Center and Science Central; free screening of “Lincoln” at 1:30 p.m. at the Allen County Public Library, 900 Library Plaza; free lecture about Fort St. Phillippe des Miamis military post 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Auer Center for the Arts, 300 E. Main St.; “Plan 9 from Outer Space” at 11:59 p.m. at Cinema Center, 437 E. Berry St., $5; and a high school art show at 2 p.m. at the Reclamation Project, 2614 S. Calhoun St., proceeds benefit rebuilding the theater.Annie Oakley Perfumery will hold a May Day celebration, offering free tours and a complimentary May Day fragrance gift to all visitors who sign up for the Annie Oakley Facebook page while at the studio, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through May 3 at 300 Johnson St., Ligonier. Tours start at 10 and 11 a.m. and 2 and 3 p.m. each day.IPFW will present a new event at this year's RiverFest: the IPFW cardboard regatta. Anyone may design, build and race a human-powered, 100 percent corrugated cardboard boat on a course on the St. Joseph River. Registration fees begin at $25 and range from one- to 10-passenger crafts.

“How to Build a Cardboard Boat” workshops take place 7-8 p.m. Wednesday and May 13 at IPFW Alumni Center, 1528 E. California Road. Workshops are free and open to the public.Comcast Cares Day, the nation's largest single-day corporate volunteer effort, takes place 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Canyon Elementary School, 15011 Coldwater Road, where Trees Indiana Inc. will be leading volunteers in a Nature Explore outdoor classroom cleanup.

Comcast expects more than 70,000 Comcast volunteers to participate in more than 600 projects across the country, and for the first time, expand internationally with NBCUniversal operating various project sites in London.The 2013 CANstruction event raised 62,848 pounds of food for Community Harvest Food Bank. Students from 11 area high schools built super-sized sculptures with donated canned goods at Glenbrook Square.“Discovering Historic Auburn,” an event showcasing local Auburn restaurants, businesses, tourist attractions, tours and live entertainment takes place 11 a.m.-5 p.m. May 19 at the cross section of West 6th and North Jackson streets.The Queen of Charities pageant takes place at 5 p.m. Sunday at The Salvation Army Corps and Community Center, 2901 N. Clinton St. Contestants, who range in age from 2 to 34, compete in areas of fundraising, poise, personality, interview and stage presence. This year's contestants have raised more than $11,000. Proceeds benefit The Salvation Army's social service programs.
