Letter to the editor: Current outrage over carnage is belated

Our community is outraged that so many homicides are being committed, and the NAACP listed 15 recommendations for what can be done to make a difference. Those recommendations address the symptoms, but not the cause. This is a moral problem. Where was the outrage when abortion was legalized (minimizing the value of life), when more children are born out of wedlock than from married couples and when same-sex couples can marry (even endorsed by politicians who have no courage, but want votes)?

We will always have exceptions because we are all sinners and fall short, but these things are becoming the norm instead of the exception.

The key is family. A loving mother and father who nurture disciplined children. Is that too much to ask? When times get difficult, family members get support from one another, not from the government.

My heart bleeds for those who have recently lost loved ones through violence, for the tired grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren because their sons or daughters are incompetent; for the teachers who are trying to teach children who are hungry, undisciplined, and without basic skills they should have learned at home.

It took more than a generation to produce the carnage of today, but if our churches and authorities have the courage to address the moral problems, the next generation should produce the children we can admire.
