CHURUBUSCO — A northeastern Indiana family trying to clear a ditch by burning off grass had to call firefighters when winds whipped the flames into a fire that scorched more than an acre of land.WANE-TV reports that Churubusco firefighters were called to the Allen County property early Saturday afternoon to douse flames that had spread out of control.

Churubusco Smith Township Fire Chief Chris Tomlinson says firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to a nearby collapsed barn. He says it took his crew about 15 minutes to douse the flames, which scorched about one and a half acres along the ditch.

Tomlinson says most people don't realize how quickly grass fires can spread.
