Archer star and her coach to represent state

Saturday, March 23, 2013 12:01 am
It turns out that News-Sentinel Girls Basketball Player of the Year Arianna Simmons will have one more game in which she will be coached by Juanita Goodwell. The South Side coach will be an assistant for the 2013 Indiana Girls' All-Star Team this June and will be reunited with Simmons.

Simmons was one of 14 players named to the All-Star team on Friday, headlined by 2013 Indiana Miss Basketball Stephanie Mavunga of Brownsburg.

“She has been such a great player for us for four years both on and off the court,” said Goodwell of Simmons recently. “She has been a tremendous asset for our program.”

Simmons averaged 17.7 points and 6.3 rebounds on the season for the state runner-up Archers. Before she continues her playing career with IPFW, she will compete in a pair of exhibitions on June 10 and 12 against the Indiana Junior All-Stars.

The Senior All-Stars will then play the Kentucky All-Stars on June 14 in Louisville and June 15 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The 14-player Indiana All-Star roster will be head coached by Mark Hunt of Mooresville.

Mavunga, who will head to North Carolina for college, edged Hamilton Southeastern's Taya Reimer in the Miss Basketball voting, winning by a margin of 79-74. She averaged 23.2 points, 12.7 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots for a Brownsburg team that finished 20-4.

Simmons was a member of the Indiana Junior All-Star team a year ago.
