More than 500 members of the Fort Wayne-based 1st Battalion, 293rd infantry regiment of the Indiana National Guard won't be deploying overseas as planned this year.
National Guard officials said the personnel won't be leaving the country as part of cutting expenditures to meet reductions in Department of Defense funding.
Capt. Kathryn Elkins said Thursday that the unit would have gone to the Horn of Africa to provide security for other U.S. military forces there. Members of the battalion have known about the deployment for about two years. It would have started this summer and lasted a little less than a year overseas, she said.
Those who would have deployed instead will continue standard training and exercise and be available for deployment in state or national emergencies.
